Corn Planting Populations

What's the right corn planting population for my farm?

A recent study indicated almost half of farmers have not changed their seeding rate in the past five years, even though seed technology has changed dramatically over that period of time.

If you haven't thought about your planting populations recently, it's time to reconsider. Populations have a significant impact on yield. But how do you choose the best population for your farm? The answer isn't exactly black and white. Go here to read more.

Ask The Agronomist

Tony Lenz, Regional Sales Agronomist

Corn Racing The Clock
In much of my southern territory, we are edging closer to corn black layer without a frost. Southern Minnesota and Southern South Dakota are in the dent stage. If a killing frost would come along at this point, here are some yield loss estimates, based on Minnesota data:

  • Dent stage: around 25% yield loss if it was killing frost (kills leaves and stalk)
  • Late dent: around 15% yield loss
  • ½ milk line: around 5% yield loss
